# Grapheme: definition for social media posting

What grapheme means in social media posting, in plain words, with how 1Post handles it.

A grapheme is what a reader sees as one character: a letter, a letter with its accent, or an emoji with its skin tone. Computers store some of these as several code points, so counting graphemes matches what people see. Bluesky counts its 300-character limit this way.

A family emoji can be several code points joined together but is one grapheme.

Counting rules explain why one text has different lengths on different networks.

## Questions

**Why does it matter?**

Because the same text can count differently by network. The [character counter](https://get1post.com/tools/character-counter.md) shows each rule.
