# Hashtag: definition for social media posting

What hashtag means in social media posting, in plain words, with how 1Post handles it.

A hashtag is a word or phrase after a hash sign that turns into a link to other posts using it. Networks use them to group topics for search. Letters, numbers and underscores work; spaces and punctuation end the tag. How many help depends on the network, so test rather than assume.

Pick tags that describe the post. A tag that does not fit brings the wrong readers.

You can paste a finished post into the [hashtag finder](https://get1post.com/tools/hashtag-finder.md) to count its tags.

## Questions

**Do hashtags work the same everywhere?**

No. Some networks lean on them for discovery and others barely show them. Treat each network separately.
