Instagram post size and aspect ratio guide

Instagram feed pictures must sit between 4:5 and 1.91:1, so square, portrait and landscape all work, and Reels and Stories are best at 9:16. The table lists each format with its limits and the date we read them. Enter your picture size to see which formats it fits and which rules it breaks.

Need a different shape? Crop it with the image resizer, or see every rule on the Instagram specs page.

The checker shows which Instagram formats the picture fits and which 1Post limits it passes.

How it works

  1. 01

The table is read from two places: Instagram's own publishing reference, for the shapes and file limits it states, and the limits 1Post applies when it posts for you. Where only one of them states a figure, the row says which.

  2. 02

Enter the width and height of your picture in pixels. The checker works out its ratio, tells you which Instagram formats it fits, and lists any 1Post limit it passes or breaks. To change a picture that does not fit, crop it with the image resizer.

  3. 03

Copy a link to the result, or open it in the composer with 1Post and schedule it to every network.

What it checks

  • Feed shapeA feed picture must be between 4:5 (portrait) and 1.91:1 (landscape).
  • WidthFeed pictures are scaled into Instagram's minimum and maximum widths when posted.
  • Reels and StoriesBoth are best at 9:16 so nothing is cropped or padded.
  • CarouselsEvery item is cropped to the first picture, which is square unless you set another shape.

It runs in your browser. Nothing you type or choose is uploaded, and the page works without an account. To publish what you made, start a trial and open it in the composer.

Questions

What is the best size for an Instagram post?

Any picture between 4:5 and 1.91:1 is accepted. Portrait 4:5 takes the most room in the feed, so 1080 by 1350 pixels is a common choice, and it is the shape the table lists for portrait.

What size should an Instagram Reel or Story be?

Instagram recommends 9:16 for both so nothing is cropped or padded. Reels take wider and taller shapes as well, but those are cropped or padded.

Does 1Post resize my picture?

It converts PNG and WebP pictures to JPEG when it posts. A picture outside the accepted shape is refused with the reason, so crop it first.

Where is the profile photo size?

This page lists only sizes we could confirm from a source we read, so the profile photo is not included.
