How-to guide

How to cross-post to Bluesky and Mastodon

Write one post in the composer and pick both accounts. Bluesky allows 300 characters and Mastodon usually 500, so each has its own tab where you can shorten or extend the text, add alt text and set a poll on Mastodon. Preview both, then schedule them together or at different times.

Steps

  1. 01

    Pick both accounts

Choose your Bluesky and Mastodon accounts in Compose.

  2. 02

    Write the main text

Type the post once. The counts for both appear under the box.

  3. 03

    Adjust each version

Open each tab and shorten or edit the text where its limit is tighter. Add alt text to images.

  4. 04

    Use threads for length

If the text is long, split it into a thread for either network.

  5. 05

    Preview and schedule

Check both previews and pick a time; each network can also have its own time.

Good to know

  • Set your Mastodon instance's own limit on the connection if it allows more than 500.

Questions

Do they count characters the same way?

No. Bluesky counts what a reader sees as one character; Mastodon counts code points and every link as 23.

Can I use a poll on both?

Polls are available on Mastodon, not together with media.
